While puppies almost exclusively include another puppy in object (resource) play, object play in kittens can be either solitary or social. When they do share a toy with another kitten, both focus on manipulating the toy by batting it back and forth or taking turns pouncing on it. However, kittens do not demonstrate the intense interest in resource guarding and possession that is a typical component of puppy play.

Ideally, puppies should receive frequent and positive human contact while they are still with their litter, and this contact should be expanded to include many new people and experiences once they are weaned and enter their new home. Unfortunately, in the real world, not all dogs and cats receive adequate interaction and handling during the sensitive period of socialization. This may occur because of a lack of knowledge on the part of owners, abandonment, or neglect. However, widespread recognition of the importance of puppy socialization has led to the development of puppy kindergarten classes (Sidebar 4).

However, in most homes, dominant/subordinate interactions between dogs are less obvious and, when they do occur, are situational and contextspecific. For example, one dog may guard his food bowl from other dogs in the home, but not show any response if another dog takes his toy or sleeps in his favorite spot. In addition, established rank orders, when they are evident, are not characterized by aggressive fights or even excessive posturing. More commonly, they can only be discerned through observing which dog consistently gains access to desired resources and which dog or dogs display appeasement or submissive postures most frequently during interactions.
